Flannel is such a warm and cozy fabric for those cold weather months. In Ontario, the winter chill starts moving in around October and sticks around well into March or even April. For the past months, I’ve been wearing this beautiful 111 North Coast Solstice Flannel from Tradlands on repeat and am wondering why I haven’t owned a flannel for years! If it was because I was waiting for the perfect flannel to come along, then I can definitely say that this one was worth the wait! Read on for my thoughts and first impressions about this Tradlands flannel.
THE DETAILS
Fit: I sized up to a medium for this flannel (I generally wear a small) as I wanted the fit to be relaxed. The medium offers a generous amount of roominess while still looking tailored and sharp. I am slightly north of 5’10” and the sleeves of this flannel are quite long which allows me to cozy up my hands in the cuffs, something I can rarely do with shirts and sweaters. In comparison to the Tradlands Elms, which I reviewed here, I would say that the overall cut of the flannel is more generous and slightly oversized. The torso length is also longer, which has been great when pairing it with leggings.
Fabric & Construction: The Tradlands flannel is constructed from a substantial yet super soft 100% cotton flannel. I was impressed by the feel of the fabric when this flannel first arrived; it just feels like quality. After many washes, the flannel still feels soft and has not pilled or lost its original smooth texture. As with my Tradlands Elms, this shirt feels like it’s made to last and I look forward to wearing it for many seasons to come.
Care: I’ve been machine washing my Tradlands flannel in cold water and hanging it to dry. After drying, I generally run over it quickly with the iron – totally not necessary, but I like my shirts to look crisp, especially when wearing them to work.
Ethics: Like the Elms, the North Coast Solstice Flannel is ethically made in Shanghai. As I am striving to build a more ethical and sustainable wardrobe, I love Tradlands’ commitment to slow fashion practices and focus on ethical manufacturing. They also make quality basics that will stand the test of time and will surely become favourites in your wardrobe for years to come. You can read more about Tradlands’ values here.
My wardrobe is fairly neutral, consisting predominantly of pieces that are grey, white or black. While these shades are my comfort zone, I sometimes crave a splash of colour, especially on those extra dreary days. I’ve found that wearing colour can sometimes really boost my mood and put an extra spring into my step. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful colours in the Tradlands North Coast Solstice Flannel – the warm shades of red and orange are a beautiful complement to the cooler blues and greys that run through the fabric.
I’ve been having a lot of fun styling this more colourful piece. It was a definite favourite and natural go-to during the past festive season. I’ve also been loving wearing it to the office with trousers and skirts and under blazers and sweaters. If #FridayOfficeFlannel isn’t a thing, it should be! My favourite way to wear it has been with jeans or leggings on weekends. This winter, my ultimate cozy comfort has been curling up by the fireplace in this flannel with a cup of tea and a book.
