Each autumn, as the leaves fall from the trees, I dread the start of the cold and stormy winter season. This year, instead of hibernating between the months of November through March, I made a conscious effort to get outside and to appreciate the beauty of the season. Dressing appropriately for the weather has helped make the frigid temperatures more enjoyable. There are some winter wardrobe essentials that have become part of my daily winter uniform and which have carried me through these past months.
Outerwear
- As I mentioned in my most recent post, I’ve been wearing my Everlane puffer non-stop. Putting it on provides instant warmth and comfort. When I come home after a day way from the house, I’ll turn on the furnace and continue to cozy up in my puffer until the heat kicks in.
- Sorel boots are warm and waterproof, which basically makes them a footwear essential for our Ontario winters. The generous toe box leaves room for extra socks and space to wiggle your feet in order to keep them warm.
- This Everlane wool trench has been a staple in my winter wardrobe for the past two seasons. It’s perfect for slightly warmer winter days or for when you are jetting between a vehicle and the indoors and want to look chic. The lighter weight of this coat also makes it an ideal transitional piece; I usually pull it out in the fall around October and wear it all the way through until April.
My Winter Uniform
- For me, winter dressing is all about layers. Generally, I’ll wear a tank or T-shirt as a base layer; a cotton button-down or a sweater; and top everything off with a blazer. Layers add warmth and versatility to an outfit while also giving the whole look a gentlewoman vibe, which I love.
- I have a fairly steady two-week rotation with the shirts and sweaters in my closet: five button-down shirts (three white, two blue); five cashmere sweaters (three grey, one black, one camel). On super cold days, I’ll sometimes layer the button-downs under the cashmere sweaters for added warmth. When it comes to tops, these wardrobe basics are all I need during the winter months. They keep me warm and are thin enough to fit under blazers and coats.
- I wear one of my four blazers on most days. I always find that throwing on a blazer adds structure and polish, making any outfit feel ‘finished.’ My current favourite blazer is the Everlane oversized blazer in herringbone.
