We’re experiencing a “real” Canadian winter this year. It’s been bone-chillingly cold since November and the regular bouts of snow and freezing rain have us on a consistent shovelling schedule. While I appreciate the beauty of a snowy landscape – tree branches frosted with freshly fallen snow and beaches seemingly transformed into glaciers – my preference has always been to observe winter indoors with a cup of coffee in hand.
At the beginning of this season, I was wearing my Everlane wool trench. While it continues to be a favourite of mine, it just wasn’t cutting it this year – I was cold. Luckily, Everlane launched a line of puffer jackets, and I was quick to pick up the Everlane Long Puffer Jacket. For sizing reference, I’m slightly north of 5′ 10″ and purchased a small. I’ve been putting this puffer to the test for several months now and it’s been such a welcome addition to my winter wardrobe.
These are some of the features I love about this puffer:
- It’s lightweight compared to wool coats. When you’re already bundled in three layers and a sweater, it’s nice to have a jacket that doesn’t weight you down
- It’s insulated with PrimaLoft Gold, a luxury down alternative. PrimaLoft feels like down and is just as warm but performs better when wet and is hypoallergenic and machine washable.
- The longer length adds warmth.
- A drawstring at the waist of the jacket and cuffs on the sleeves keep the cold out and warmth in.
- Sitting can be challenging with long coats, but the two-way zipper makes it easy to sit down and to get into vehicles.
- When I first unboxed the jacket, I was slightly disappointed by the front pockets as they are quite vertical and a little awkward to put your hands into. But to my delight, I soon discovered that there are amazing side pockets above these that are perfectly angled and beautifully cozy and fleecy.
- The fabric is quite substantial. It’s a matte black and is thick enough to keep out the frosty winds.
A couple of features that could be tweaked:
- A flap to cover the zipper would be a nice addition. When walking in the wind on an exceptionally cold day, I could feel a cold line down the centre of my body.
- Fleece around the collar and a collar that sits slightly closer to the neck would be ideal. I squirm a little when a cold neckline and zipper touch my skin in the winter.
This jacket has made winter so much more enjoyable for me. I’ve even recommended some winter hikes and excursions to my hubby, which led us to this beautiful photo spot! My hubby felt puffer envy and picked up Everlane’s Lightweight Puffer Jacket.
Stay warm, everyone!
