The weather has been getting warmer and the brave tulips in our front yard have boldly pushed their way through the still icy soil proclaiming that spring has sprung. A couple of weeks ago, on a very rainy Sunday, I started the planning process for my Spring/Summer capsule wardrobe. If you have a capsule wardrobe, I’d love to hear about your planning process.
As a first step, I like to use the transitional period between seasons to evaluate my outgoing capsule (Fall/Winter, in this case), deciding which items to donate, which to tuck away into storage for next year, and which to incorporate into my capsule for the upcoming season. This editing process helps me reflect upon what I enjoy wearing and is helping me to better define my personal style with every passing season. If you haven’t yet read about my F/W capsule wardrobe, you can find that post here. Below, I’ve included notes on what I have done with each piece in preparation for my S/S capsule:
Sweaters
- Black cashmere v-neck sweater (I was thinking about replacing this sweater as it is quite old. However, after running over it with a cashmere comb it looks like new!) | Storage
- Grey cashmere crew neck sweater. During the winter season, I also bought this sweater in a charcoal grey and a camel colour as it is lightweight and a great layering piece for work. | Storage
- Light grey slouchy acrylic sweater (This sweater from H&M got a lot of wear this winter, but after a couple of washes it is looking very ragged and has pilled terribly. I have let this sweater be a lesson to me – you get what you pay for when it comes to knitwear.) | Wear around the house
- Dusty rose cashmere sweater | Storage
- Hunter green wool and mohair chunky sweater | Storage
Shirts
- Long-line light blue shirt | Transition to S/S
- Long-line white sleeveless shirt | Transition to S/S
- Long-line grey blouse (Only wore this a handful of times and it just didn’t make me feel like myself) | Donate
- Navy blue criss-cross blouse | Storage
- Chambray shirt | Transition to S/S
- White chiffon blouse (Because this shirt is so sheer, I prefer to wear it under sweaters when the weather is colder) | Storage
- Long black tunic-style sweater with side splits | Storage
Bottoms
- Three pairs of black skinny Levi’s 711 jeans with different levels of fading (Can’t live without these!) | Transition to S/S
- One pair of black ankle-length slacks | Transition to S/S
- Black pencil skirt | Transition to S/S
- Shorter black skirt (As this skirt feels quite short on me, I won’t be wearing it without black tights) | Storage
Dresses
- Short-sleeve navy blue shift dress | Storage
- Long-sleeve navy blue shift contrast dress (Too short without tights/jeans) | Storage
- Grey sweater dress | Storage
Outerwear & Blazers
- Trench coat | Transition to S/S
- Black wool trench coat | Storage
- Down-filled parka | Storage
- Grey long-line tweed blazer | Storage
- Black blazer and new navy blue blazer (Both of these are the J. Crew Regent blazer; although they are wool, I will keep them on hand for those chilly spring/summer mornings and air conditioned spaces) | Transition to S/S
Shoes
- 1 pair of black chelsea boots | Still wearing right now during spring, but will put into storage as it gets warmer
- 1 pair of black patent leather loafers | Transition to S/S
- 1 pair of black high-heeled boots (Didn’t end up wearing these very often; I have decided to store them for now and will re-evalauate next fall) | Storage/Donate
- Adidas Superstars | Transition to S/S
- Frye Campus boots | Storage
- Red Wing Engineers | Storage
- Olive green Hunter boots | Transition to S/S
The next step in my capsule wardrobe transition involves shopping my closet by pulling last year’s items out of storage.
See you soon and happy spring wardrobe editing!
