I am constantly moving items around in our house. Pictures, plants, pillows and essentially anything that is not attached to a wall and fits through a door frame travels from room to room. Changing around interior details keeps our spaces feeling fresh and exciting without buying new items. Relocating an item can give it an entirely different look and I often find new joy in items by placing them into different contexts.
My love for neutral colours extends beyond my capsule wardrobe to the colour palette of our home. Most of the items in our home are white, grey, black and blue with fresh plants to add splashes of green. Sticking to a colour palette makes it easy to switch things around to my heart’s content while ensuring that our home feels cohesive with one room flowing into the next.
The photo above is how our bedroom looked this summer (this photo may look familiar if you follow me on Instagram). The white linens with the nautical-style striped pillow cases felt fresh and summery. This photo was taken shortly after my husband Ryan crafted these nightstands. Didn’t he do a great job? I love them and think they look great with our IKEA bed and the whitewashed photo ledge (also created by the talented Ryan).
As the colder weather moved in, it was time to pull out the heavier duvet and we also changed to these dark grey linens. The darker shade transforms the look of the space and it now feels a lot cozier for the winter months. I also changed around the photos on the ledge to better complement the dominant grey and white tones and added a fresh pine branch for that wintery feel. At this time of the year, conifer sprigs are in almost every room in our home as I feel they match the season better than flowers while still adding some life to a space. The seasonal DW Home pine wreath candle is the perfect addition for a cozy winter space.
In case you were curious about the Alfred Hitchcock portrait, it’s a completed connect the dots picture from The 1000 Dot-to-Dot Book: Icons. I think these are a creative and inexpensive alternative to a print; Salvador Dali is part of the gallery wall in our living room.
Do your rooms change with the seasons?
