My fall/winter capsule wardrobe has been coming together nicely. I’ve been wearing it for about a month now, still reaching back to some of my summer items during those unusually hot autumn days. In my last post, I explained what led me to creating a capsule, why I like it and what my process was in developing a small wardrobe that works for me. Today, I’m sharing the basic breakdown of what pieces are in my F/W capsule wardrobe this year and showing you some of my favourite outfit combinations.
When creating my capsule wardrobe, I did not limit myself to a certain number of items, nor did I apply specific rules in terms of the number of items I could purchase each season. For the capsule wardrobe to be effective for me, the concept needs to remain fluid, allowing me to edit as required. I look at creating a capsule wardrobe as an editing process; editing involves both adding and taking away, but the goal is to create something that is well-rounded and works together as a whole.
For me, a capsule wardrobe is about having a closet full of stellar go-to pieces, both basic and more unique, which you can interchangeably combine to create a variety of looks that make you feel your best and convey your true style. I especially love pieces that can be both dressed up for work and dressed down for the weekend. Those pieces are the real winners in your capsule wardrobe that are worth investing in.
So, here is my basic F/W capsule breakdown:
Colour Palette
When creating a capsule, I found it very useful to have a colour palette in mind to ensure the pieces mostly “go together” and can be mixed and matched. This was pretty easy for me as I tend to gravitate towards neutrals (read: #blackismyhappycolour) with cool greys and blue tones. I also included a hunter green shade which I’ve really loved wearing; I feel like it combines so nicely with softer blues and somehow makes everything feel luxurious and sophisticated. My basic colour scheme for this season’s wardrobe looks something like this:
The Key Pieces
For me, most items in my capsule are pretty key, especially for F/W where every item plays an integral role in keeping you warm and cozy. In my key pieces, I do not include layering pieces, like T-shirts and tank tops; altogether, I have around 8 t-shirts and 5 tank tops that I wear under sweaters and dresses and when lazing around the house. I also don’t include accessories – that will be a separate post!
