Smoothies are a delicious way to cram loads of fruits and greens into your diet with very little effort (minimal chewing required!). As the days are now finally beginning to feel a little warmer, I am craving foods that are lighter and more hydrating. Fresh fruit is obviously the natural go-to, but carting around a big bowl of salad during the day and taking the time to sit down and eat everything is not always possible. Green smoothies pack all of that deliciousness into one glass. Just blend, go, and get on with it.
I started experimenting with different smoothie combos while at University. Smoothies turned out to be a fantastic timesaver for those mornings after a late night of writing that entire term paper in one sitting (ugh!). I would prep my fruit beforehand and store it in the fridge/freezer. In the mornings, I would then just throw everything into a blender with some water, hit a button, pour into a travel mug, and be on my way out the door to my 8:00 a.m. literary theory lecture, nutritious breakfast in hand.
This tropical green smoothie quickly became one of my favourites. The spinach taste is well masked by the fruits, so it’s pretty easy to hide many handfuls of spinach in one glass. I found that the more I drank green smoothies, the less bitter the greens tasted and over time I could palate a higher ratio of greens. The greens also seem to mellow out the fruit sugars, so it doesn’t feel like you’ve had 3 shots of espresso once you’ve reached the bottom of the smoothie cup.
To make this tropical green smoothie delight, you basically just throw the fruit and water into a blender and blend until smooth. Next, add the greens to taste (cram in more handfuls of spinach, if you like!) and blend until everything is well combined.
One trick that makes smoothies extra delicious is using frozen bananas. Whenever we have bananas sitting in the fruit bowl that are beginning to look quite brown and spotty, I will peel and slice them and throw them into the freezer in a freezer bag or tupperware container. As these bananas are very ripe, they are extra flavourful, which naturally amps up the sweetness factor of your smoothie. Since they are frozen, they also cool down the drink and become creamy when you blend them, making everything taste nice and smooth.
Once I have my tropical green smoothie in a glass and ready to go, I like to sprinkle some unsweetened shredded coconut on top for an extra taste of the tropics. Very decadent!
Enjoy!
